Concept & Rationale

The goal of this project was to create a magazine ad based on Surrealism, for the class GDES 1255 at BCIT. My inspiration was Dali, Magritte and other Surrealist artists.

I wanted to create an ad for a coffee brand, but then I thought why not do the unexpected, as that was the direction of this project to begin with.  I then started researching coffee alternatives and found that there is a brand of brewed cacao called Crio Bru so I decided to use their brand for the ad idea.

Design Process

For the thumbnail sketches it was pretty much whatever came to mind as "surrealist".  A lady's face with a coffee mug for a mouth, a coffee pot pouring into a cup but it flows up instead of down.  Melting face and tears but it's coffee.  Various sketches as inspired by art.

The sketch idea that I finally liked the best was inspired by Magritte's "Son of Man" just but it's a coffee mug, no hat or face or apple.  The concept was that the person is so obsessed that it's just a cup head.

I took this sketch and revised it in illustrator with more detail so that I would redraw onto a canvas.  I then sketched and painted the design on the canvas. From there I scanned the art, and added the logo for the brand and the text above the cup;

Final Design

The final design is painting on canvas then added text and the logo in photoshop.  I also edited a steam effect as I wanted it to steam overtop of the letters.  The text "C'est pas du cafe, c'est du Cacao" is because it's cacao as a coffee alternative where it's not expected as ads are commonly for coffee products.  It's also a play on Magritte's "this is not a pipe".
