Concept & Rationale

This project is an album cover design for a fictional post punk band for the class GDES 1255 at BCIT.  I wanted something like Bauhaus, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees sounding so something similar they were
doing for design in the 1970's - 1980's post punk sound and art.

Colours used would be primary colours and design era inspiration was the Bauhaus movement and modern art movement. So very geometric shapes and bold primary colours. Matisse' cut-outs were also and inspiration to the art style.

Design Process

After creating the mood board to find colour and shape inspiration I then created thumbnail sketches.  The base idea was to have shapes that I could have from cut out paper or origami folding.  I then did my rough draft and cut origami paper and pasted to a 12.5" x 12.5" poster board to have the actual size of paper cutouts on the same paper stock as an album cover.

The next step was to scan the poster board so that I could edit it digitally and ad text. The typefaces I used were Futura for the band name as it fit with the post punk style era and also Helvetica was one that had a lot of use in album cover art in the early 1980's.

Final Design

My finished design includes the front and back on the album cover as well as the label on the centre of the vinyl LP. I worked within a round frame and rearranged the graphic elements and text to show the track list for each sides of the record.

I enjoyed this project as it was tactile in that I got to create with physical media (coloured paper) as the main part of the design project and used photoshop to add the finishing touches.
